Manchester United attacker, Cristiano Ronaldo in an eye-opening interview has revealed some of the issues if not all that have hindered the Red Devils from competing at very top level.
Though with the interview coming at a time many see as the wrong period, it still doesn’t change the fact that Ronaldo spoke about things that should be looked into in order to help the progress of the club.
One of the main issues the 37-year-old spoke about is the club’s failure to advance with time, marking that he was so disappointed to still find same facilities at Old Trafford as it was when he left 13-years ago.
Below is the full transcript from Ronaldo’s interview with Piers Morgan.
Ronaldo on overtaking Lionel Messi’s kit sales record when he returned: “Of course I do [feel happy]. I don’t follow records, the records follow me.”
Cristiano Ronaldo on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: “I love Solskjær. I think he was a top person, because what I keep inside my heart, it’s the heart of the persons. And Ole for me, is a top person. It’s hard to assume [the role] after Sir Alex Ferguson, but I think he did a good job.
“You need much more time. But I’m never doubt that you’re going to be a good coach in the future. But it was a good experience. I was, I was so pleased to work with him even for a short period.”
Ronaldo on Ralf Rangnick: “Of course, I respect, we have to call [him boss] because he assumed the job regardless – all the coaches that I had in my career, I call them boss because if they assume the job we have to call in that way.”
“In the end, deep inside me, I never saw him [Rangnick] as the boss because I saw some points that I never agreed [with].
“I respect any coach, every different approach, different opinions, different mentality, but kind of [there are] some points that you don’t agree with.
Ronaldo on his past managers: “”I’ve always been, besides the best coaches in the world: Zidane and Ancelotti, Mourinho, Fernando Santos, Allegri… so I have kind of, some experience because I learn from them.
“When you sack Ole Gunnar Solskjær, you should bring a top manager, not a sports director.”
Ronaldo on young players now: “It doesn’t surprise me, but in the same way it’s a little bit of a shame because if they have the best examples in front of your eyes, and if they don’t at least copy what you did, for me, it’s kind of weird.
“I remember when I was 18, 19, 20, I always looked to see the best players – van Nistelrooy, Ferdinand, Roy Keane, and Giggs. This is why I have the success that I have and longevity.
“I’m not the kind of guy who likes to give advice as I prefer to be an example. I’m there every morning and do the same stuff. I’m probably the first one to arrive and the last one to go out. I think the details speak for itself.”
Ronaldo on the support he received following the passing of his newborn baby: “I never, ever expect that, never. I have the opportunity now to say, all English community, thank you a lot for that, [it] kind of helped with me.”
“I received a letter from The Queen’s family as well [after the death of his son, Angel] – and, it surprised me a lot. This is why I say, I respect a lot, the English community, English people, because they’ve been very kind with me.
“People only try to bring negativity. And I felt the last four or five months that, not only for me, but even for my family as well, for Georgina, especially around the world, the press criticize me even more. Sometimes I don’t understand.”
Ronaldo on media critics: “I still believe that the jealousy is part of that [media criticism]. They want to cover many things that helps to shine other things. But listen, I know I’m 21 years at the top of the game, so I know all the takes, so for me it’s not a problem.
“I care for the people who like me. I’m not wasting time, for the people who don’t like me. I think it’s a waste of time, these people are not interesting in my life.”
Ronaldo on pundits: “I really don’t understand people like that. Or if they want to be in a cover of the paper of the news, or they want new jobs or whatever.”
Ronaldo on if Ralf Rangnick knew what he was doing at Manchester United: “No.”
Ronaldo on the younger Manchester United players with the best mentality: “Diogo Dalot, he’s young, but he’s very, very, professional. I have no doubt he’s going to have longevity in football. Also, probably Martinez.”
Ronaldo on his future before Manchester United move: “I was close to joining Manchester City in 2021 – I was surprised as they tried hard to sign me.”
